Mixing the old with the new in Missouri’s first capital
By Josh Gilbert, Special to Metromix
When I was in college at the University of Missouri (M-I-Z...), there was a bar that accommodated both college students and Columbia townies, in one holy beer-soaked matrimony. On any given night, cowboy hats and backwards fraternity baseball caps could mingle amongst one another, splitting songs on the jukebox, bonding over the love of cheap Stag beer. What made it work is that ultimately, we’re all the same (duh), and we all love going out drinking. Well, if you’re looking for this mixed camaraderie of young college students and adult townies, on a macro scale, there’s no better place than Main Street St. Charles. Experiencing a revitalization, new hip bars are renovating locations next to established hole-in-the-walls, leading to a great time for all. We hitched a ride on one of the many well-organized pub crawls that stumble up and down the cobblestone streets to check out some of the fancy new spots and golden oldies Main Street has to offer.
