All the reviews on Mike Talayna's are negative here, but I feel that many do not see the real picture. Although at times interesting and unique, Mike Talayna's bar is always fun. People can say whatever they choose, but the staff at Talayna's always try to learn everyone's name who enters. Sean, the DJ, is an extremely sweet guy always trying to create the best environment for all. The main bartender, Kathy, does everything in her ability to ensure everyone has fun. Talaynas does have disco balls all over the ceiling-- and the carpets aren't clean, but as long as you go in for a good time-- that you will have. I have never not had an interesting fun night at Talaynas-- and I sing everytime I go in.

Rampant Crime

Don't drive car. Including myself, I know of 17 cars in the past year that have been vandalized outside Mike T's while inside. On 11/18/11, myself and 5 others had windows smashed and items stolen - all parked in a row.

The 'Improvements" Over the Past years Are NOT Improvements.

They've lost a loyal customer here. This was once a place you could find karaoke nearly every night of the week up until 3 a.m. Which was what we loved about the place. Now they've turned it into something more like a "sin city" club ... if we wanted that we'd go across the river to one of the all night dance clubs just a few miles away. The loyal karaoke junkie followers that used to love this place absolutely hate it now.... In an attempt to bring in more of the "college crowd" they've chased away their tried and true followers who, frankly, had more money to spend and would come out in droves for karaoke. This "new look" is an epic fail in my honest opinion.

NOT KARAOKE
By STLMISERY, April 24, 2010

This was my first and last visit to this bar. If you like Karaoke, you will not like this place. They start karaoke at an unreasonable 10pm, and they end it at a ridiculous 12 midnight, and go to nothing but dance music, not to mention their sound system is terrible. If I wanted to go to a dance club, I'd go to one. This place advertises itself strongly as a karaoke bar, but it is truly far from that. The DJ that was working the night I went in there was terrible, there was water dripping from the mirror glass ceiling in numerous locations throughout the building, and the overall decor is absolutely awful. When I walked in this bar, I thought I was walking into a strip club over in Saguet, Illinois. The drinks are ridiculously expensive, and can you believe they actually charge a cover charge to get into this place??? You'd have to PAY ME to come back to this bar. This was my first and last time patronizing this bar. If you like karaoke, stay away from this place for sure. I will continue going to my usual places I go to for karaoke.

You either get it or you don't.

I've noticed there are some mixed reviews on this place, but as my title indicates, you either get it or you don't. Talayna's is the kind of place you go to if you want a unique experience full of excellent music, good natured people, and great times all around in the absence of judgment and pretense. Sure, it looks like a converted strip club on the inside, and I'm sure that better food has been served. But that's not the point. The point is if you are looking to have an excellent time that includes dancing (not grinding...well, some grinding), singing, and a little bit of adventure, then this is the place for you.

Blast from the Past

The place is a complete dive bar. It looks like something between a strip club and a 70's disco club (100's of disco balls hang from the ceiling). Yet I and my friends usually have a blast going there. On Friday and Saturdays the place picks up around 11 and stays open until 3. The drinks are reasonably priced, nice dance area, and the karaoke can be fun to sing and listen to. Lots of single ladies, Bachelorette parties, and dudes frequent this place. You would never guess this place is a good time from the outside!

If you were a piece of bread and went to this place you'd feel right at home because the inside of this joint looks like a toaster. And the other reviewer is right, the place is very dirty.

Jukebox or Strip Club?
By kellybu, July 2, 2008

There's no good way to say this... the Juke Box looks like a bad stripper bar with tacky lighting and mirrors galore. The layout is ridiculously nonstrategic and the place is filthy, including the carpet that gets a daily dose of beer spillage, is sticky, and stinks.

They generally pay people around $40 to run their karaoke machine from 9PM - 3AM and then help clean tables afterward. So, you can only imagine who's running the karaoke show!

Unless you really have a hankering for singing karaoke on a bad system at 2:30 AM (they can get a late night crowd), I can see no benefit in entering the front door. Yuck!
