So you like… chardonnay
By Angela Ortmann
Special to Metromix
Chardonnay is the most popular white wine in the United States, and rightfully so. It has an appealing flavor profile – apples, pears, peaches, tropical fruits and more! It is also probably the most accessible white wine around, sold in grocery stores, wine shops, restaurants and even gas stations! By the bottle, by the box or by the jug, Americans love their Chardonnay!
Now for your quick history lesson... Chardonnay is believed to date back to the Romans, or possibly even earlier. Due to its flexibility with climate and soil, it is planted almost everywhere in the world, most notably France, California, Australia and South America.
This grape varietal can be produced in many different styles as well. From the crisp and fruity Chardonnays of France to the buttery oak bombs of California, Chardonnay is a chameleon. Every bottle is unique. It would be hard not to find one you like. But why limit ourselves? There are a plethora of wines out there, and it is an exciting experience to find new ones to enjoy!
So now we begin a journey to find some fantastic alternatives to Chardonnay...
