Best bike trails in St. Louis

Gas prices got you down? Are you on the Prius waiting list? Have you postponed—or even cancelled—a summer road trip in favor of a more cost-effective, local vacation?

Fear not—you can still feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face. You can still get that open road vibe without the expense (or the hassles of traffic jams, choosing a hotel or coming up with an excuse not to visit one of your wonky relatives).

Our advice: Strap your Schwinn to the back of that gas-guzzler and check out a few of our great local bike trails. The only reason to visit a filling station will be to grab a bottle of water.

These five trails should get you started. And though the list includes rides for every ability level, it’s always a good idea to dust off the helmet and bring a partner or two. Play it safe while you save up for that hybrid.

Grant's Trail at Grant's Farm

Grant’s Trail is an eight-mile “rails to trails” bike trail that stretches from Affton to Kirkwood

MCT Bikeway in Collinsville

Eighty-five miles of trails crisscross Madison County, passing through a number of Metro East towns

Greensfelder - As smooth as it gets on Declue

One of the area's most challenging bike trails, Greensfelder’s 4.8 mile Declue trail is hilly, rock-strewn, rife with serpents, and you’ll be unlikely to encounter another human being until you return to the Visitor Center parking lot

Queeny Park - Deer at trail edge

The mixed terrain and rolling hills of Ballwin’s Queeny County Park make for a moderately challenging ride

Riverfront Trail - Skyline from McKinley Bridge

The Riverfront Trail runs from the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge to Laclede's Landing. That's 11 miles of asphalt. There's plenty to see along the way, not the least of which is the river scenery
