As a Valentine’s Day cynic, I spent many years attempting to buck the clichés of the holiday (you know, the heart-filled, rose getting, chocolate eating that single girls despise and coupled-up chicas expect). Gag. In the meantime, I discovered a lot of non-traditional ways to have fun on the day of love. In the past, I have spent the day hosting grade-school themed parties (you know, the kind with Funfetti cupcakes and mailboxes constructed from shoeboxes), sharing cocktails and chick flicks with my lady friends, and, on more than one occasion, enjoying the white tablecloth experience at White Castle (I wish that I was kidding).
This year, I will happily spend my evening cuddled up on the couch with the two men in my life—Teddy the Pomeranian and David the boyfriend. Though we’re not much for the grand Valentine’s Day gestures, we will enjoy a night filled with Chinese take-out from Emperor’s Wok, a pint of cookies and cream ice cream and season one of Mad Men on DVD.
However, never fear, if your idea of Valentine’s Day fun doesn’t involve an evening on the couch, I have a few suggestions for most every type of couple. Read on and choose your own adventure!
