Season 6 finalist Phil Stacey guest blogs the 'American Idol' finale:
Final thoughts: It was a showing of tremendous talent and ability by both performers, but in the end, Phillip Phillips comes out on top.
Jessica Sanchez came out and did exactly what I expected and sang three power ballads to demonstrate her vocal prowess. She definitely did that well, but failed to show how she is a relevant contribution to modern commercial music. The lackluster production surrounding her songs certainly did not help her to maximize the energy in each performance, and her final song choice -- which was announced as her first single -- was disliked unanimously by the judges. In the end, everyone agrees that Jessica is a phenomenal singer and her career will not be defined by the performances tonight, but by the record that she releases later this year.
My advice to Jessica: Embrace those R&B abilities! Your voice is simply stunning and everybody knows you can do those big songs. But you need to find a way to really do fun songs and make them shine as brightly as your ballads do. Congratulations on doing so well and we're all looking forward to hearing your album.
Phillip came out and demonstrated his identity as an artist in every performance, each song being more polished than the last. His last performance, which was announced as his first single, may be my favorite debut single for an Idol artist in the history of the show. He has big shoes to fill with Scotty McCreery debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart last year, but I believe he could totally do well and have a great career!
My advice to Phillip: Stick to your guns. You know what kind of songs you want to do, so do them. The industry has a tendency of going the safe route and trying to make new artists lean more toward what is selling well at the moment, which is their job as business people. It will be your job to remind them that every artist that has revolutionized the industry has done their own thing. And if anyone is capable of that, it is you. Great job tonight and the best of luck in your career.
Thanks to you all for hanging out with me here on Idol Chatter tonight and I hope you enjoyed the finale as much as I did!
