Indie Rock Ice Cream Social turns five at The Firebird

The 5th annual Indie Rock Ice Cream Social is happening at The Firebird on Saturday, and if you're not familiar with the event, it's as simple (and awesome) as its name suggests: you eat ice cream and listen to some rock 'n' roll. Sounds like summer, right?
Well, for starters, the ice cream is free, provided by the good people at Serendipity Homemade Ice Cream. You buy a ticket, you're gonna get your sweets. I'm not sure I remember the last time I ate ice cream and listened to live music, but the idea sounds grand, especially with the temperatures on the rise. (Oh, and The Firebird has a new air conditioning system, so you won't be racing to finish your treat while it melts.)
As for the live music, the lineup is also pretty sweet. Headlining will be Chicago's JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, who aren't really indie rock, but we'll let that slide. They're up-and-comers for sure, having just performed at the Solid Sound Festival with the likes of Wilco and Thurston Moore. Heck, the soul group even got to perform Wilco's "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" with Jeff Tweedy. Here's the evidence.
They'll be joined by two local acts, The Breaks and Bear Hive. And if that isn't enough, KDHX DJ Chris Bay will be rocking your ears in between sets with some jams. You get all of this for $10 (buy tickets here); I'd say that's a pretty good excuse to consume some empty calories and listen to some great music. Wouldn't you agree?
