Nov. 3rd: Kings of Leon get crowned at The Pageant

Special to Metromix

It's a busy week at The Pageant, highlighted by no other than Kings of Leon, who will perform a sold-out concert tonight (11/3). In what should be a high-energy show filled with tunes off their latest album, Only By the Night, and 2007's critically-lauded Because of the Times, the band from Nashville continues to rise and build its fan base by turning up their amps. You could call it an encore performance, as their show at The Pageant in May of 2007 obviously left fans wanting more. And with Only By the Night sounding just as good as Because of the Times, call yourself lucky if you own a ticket to tonight's show. It might be one of your last opportunities to see the band in an intimate venue like The Pageant. If you aren't planning on making it out tonight, Metromix will snapping quality shots at the show, so look out for those tomorrow.

While the quartet hasn't gained popularity through radio play, lead singer Caleb Followill—along with brothers, Nathan and Jared, and cousin, Matthew—seem determined to get their music heard by staying true to their rock 'n roll sound while follwoing a frantic tour scheulde that will bring them all over the globe through the remainder of 2008. And it's sold-out shows like tonight that have confirmed their success.

Another cant-miss show on the docket this week is Wolf Parade at The Gargoyle (11/8). While The Gargoyle isn't one of my favorite venues around town, mainly because of sound issues, the place always seems to book several solid shows throughout the year, and this one will be no exception. The indie band from Monreal is in the middle of a tour promoting their experimental 2008 release, At Mount Zoomer. Recent reviews from shows in New York City and Los Angeles tell only one thing: everyone loves Wolf Parade. You should, too (hint: $20 tickets still remain).

If any of that doesn't do it for you, how about coming out to support local singer-songwriter Leslie Sanazaro Santi, who will be performing new songs off her latest album, On Your Roof, at Sqwires (11/7)?

Five to Download for the Week of Nov. 3rd:

"Use Somebody," Kings of Leon

I'm sure you'll hear this standout track off Only By the Night tonight at The Pageant. In my opinion, Caleb Followill's vocals have never sounded better.

"Language City," Wolf Parade

This five-minute rocker should get the crowd going at The Gargoyle. Combining synths and guitars, it's Wolf Parade at its best.

"See How I Run," Jessie Baylin

This track off 2008's Firesight shows off Baylin's smoky vocals and songwriting skills. Jessie will be in town at Pop's on November 13th supporting Matt Nathanson.

"How the Day Sounds," Greg Laswell

Speaking of singer-songwriters, here's another up-and-comer with a track off 2008's Three Flights From Alto Nido. Laswell uses keyboards to drive this one home. He'll be in town at Blueberry Hill on November 14th.

"I'm Amazed," My Morning Jacket

The band won't be coming to St. Louis this year, but you can still enjoy this rocker off 2008's Evil Urges.
