8. Mike Patton
As the frontman for such groundbreaking bands as Faith No More, Fantômas and Mr. Bungle, Mike Patton is best-known for his incredible vocals, which can swoop at a moment’s notice from a seductive croon to a banshee-like wail (a wail so uncanny, he was hired to voice the monsters in the Will Smith film “I Am Legend”). But for his latest project, Patton barely sings at all. With “The Solitude of Prime Numbers,” Patton has created a soundtrack for both the film and the book of the same name, providing orchestral analogies to an experimental storyline that uses mathematics to trace the arc of two lives lived separately but with uncanny parallels. Patton describes the project as a “sonic departure”—a term that could refer to virtually every step of his unique career.
