Dorm Room dinners at 33 Wine Bar
By Adam Claypool, Metromix
One of my favorite haunts is 33 Wine Bar in Lafayette Square. Why? Because I love wine, and the selection at 33 is better than anywhere else in town. I'm talking 700+ options. That's a lot of wine, and the list changes constantly. Even better, the staff is super knowledgeable. The more you go there, the more they get to know your taste. So if something new comes in, they'll let you know... even if the bottle hasn't officially made it on their list yet. Seriously, the place almost has a private supper club atmosphere, minus the food (other than a few Charcuterie boards). Or so I thought. It turns out 33 offers one really interesting, and amazing, dinner experience a month. It's sort of hush-hush, but those in the know are literally eating 33's "Dorm Room" dinners up. Each month, the wine bar brings in some of the best chefs in town for a culinary experience like no other. The "Dorm Room" is a literal translation. The chefs can only prepare their five-course meals with a microwave, toaster or hot plate - the same heating utensils you'll find in your standard dorm. Like I said, though, these are some of the most talented chefs in town - so they're not going to let the heating tools get in their way. My first dinner, which happened May 17, 2010, featured the "Good Chefs of The Good Pie".
